A 40ft seascape running along each side of the truck's trailer hides a row of hay bales and a safety rope - safety was very much in evidence at this year's Gala, but never got in the way. Stewards checked everything and then gave simple, practical safety instructions to each float before the procession started.

"Health & Safety" is often quoted as the reason that events like this can no longer happen in many towns & villages across the UK, but in Shefford, we just take it on board, learn how to do it properly, and then get on with it.
